The pace

The pace is yours

In trauma therapy, going faster is not the same as going further. At Brume the pace belongs to you, and it is checked at the start and end of every session.

  • You can pause

Say 'pause' or lift a hand. We stop, look around the room and decide what comes next.

  • You can pass

Any question or exercise can be skipped. You do not have to say why.

  • You can change the subject

A whole session can be about the week you had.

  • You can end early

Sessions are 50 minutes, and you can finish sooner. We still spend time coming back to the present.

Three phases

What each phase is for, and how we know to move on

The phases are a map, not a schedule. People move forward, back and sideways, and that is expected.

  1. Phase one

    Step 1: Steadying

We find out what keeps you in the room and build a few practices you can use alone. We look at sleep, support and the hours after a session.

    • We move on when you say you can use your practices

    • Some people stay here for months

  2. Phase two

    Step 2: Working with memory

We choose one thing to work with, a small part of it, and a way to stop. Each session ends with grounding.

    • We move on when you say the memory feels further away

    • We can return to phase one at any time

  3. Phase three

Step 3: Returning to your days

We turn to what you want: friends, work, rest, a better night. The sessions can get further apart.

    • You decide when to stop

    • You can come back

About the pace

Questions about going slowly

Is slow the same as stuck?

Not at Brume. In the first phase you are building the steadiness the later work depends on, and that is work. If you feel stuck, say so and we will look at it together.

What if I want to go faster?

Tell us. Some people are ready sooner than they expected. We will check what is steady first, and then go as far as you can stay present.

How many sessions will it take?

We cannot say, and we do not promise a number. It depends on you, your life and what you want from the work.

Can I take a break?

Yes. Many people pause for a month or a season, and come back. We will do our best to find you a time when you return.

Would you like to set the pace?

Write to us and say what would feel right. That is enough.
